Melissa Corwin joined the firm as an associate in 2003 and was promoted to Partner in 2013, thereby creating Somer, Heller & Corwin, LLP. Ms. Corwin received her undergraduate degree from the University of Vermont in political science and psychology and her law degree from the Villanova University School of Law, where she served on the Villanova Law Review and was published therein.
Ms. Corwin started developing her legal experience even prior to entering law school by working with private law firms in Burlington, Vermont (general practice) and Hauppauge, New York (real estate). During law school she was provided invaluable experience, both municipal and private, when she was selected to serve in positions with the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Court of Common Pleas (Hon. Flora Barth Wolf) and several private law firms with areas of practice in matrimonial law, criminal law and wills, trusts and estates. After graduation and prior to joining the firm, Ms. Corwin was an associate with Keller, O’Reilly & Watson, P.C., a medical malpractice and elevator injury defense firm.
Ms. Corwin concentrates a large part of her practice in all phases of civil and commercial litigation in the Federal and State trial and appellate courts. Her litigated matters include: business, commercial and corporate disputes; partnership dissolutions; creditor/debtor disputes and bankruptcy issues; real estate; trademark/Lanham Act; trusts and estates; personal injury; property damage; and matrimonial and family law matters. Ms. Corwin is also experienced in the preparation of transactional documents including employment agreements, shareholder/partnership agreements and construction and other contracts. Ms. Corwin is known for her attention to detail, thoroughness in research and drafting and briefing skills.
Ms. Corwin is admitted to practice in the State and Federal Courts of New York and New Jersey and is a Member of the New York State and Suffolk County Bar Associations.
Ms. Corwin resides in Setauket with her husband and two children. In her time away from the firm, she enjoys weekend outings with her family and photographing her children.
